SAVORY SAILINGS 2017 | SPECIAL RATES from DALY TRAVEL

European river lines are adding new dining features for 2017-18.

River cruise lines are springing into 2017 with many new culinary and wine options. We’ve highlighted some of the best new savory experiences afloat on European rivers. Daly Travel offers special rates for all sailings.

COOKING CLASSES: The debut of “Scenic Culinaire” by Scenic Cruises will offer a private cooking emporium with tailored classes, cooking stations, real-time cameras, viewing screens and a cheese and wine center on three of its ships. New shore-side foodie excursions include a visit to Baltard Market in Arcachon on the Atlantic coast, lunch at the Michelin three-star Maison Pic in Valence and a Chateau Phelan Segur wine tasting and food pairing event in the Medoc region.

FRESH AND HEALTHY: Avalon Waterways will launch its “Avalon Fresh” program this year in partnership with Leo and Karl Wrenkh, two of Europe’s rising culinary stars. Avalon will add new healthy, locally sourced food options, including vegetarian and gluten-free dishes. The Wrenkh’s creations will be offered for continental breakfasts, buffets and al fresco lunches.

SIP AND SAIL: For 2018, AmaWaterways will introduce a new “Sip and Sail” where guests will receive drinks within the hour before dinner at no extra charge. The program will include white, red, rose and sparkling house wines plus classics like gin fizz, Margarita, martinis, beers and more mixed drinks.

PRIVATE WINE TASTINGS: Abercrombie & Kent offers a new 14-day “Paris, Champagne & Alsace by Barge” itinerary visiting villages and vineyards. Float along the Marne River from Paris through the Champagne region onboard the six-cabin canal barge Panache. Highlights include private wine tastings at wineries from Alsace to Champagne and dining ashore in Michelin-starred restaurants.

WINE DINNER: For its 10-day “Portugal’s Rivers of Gold” itinerary this year, Viking River Cruises is preparing a new port wine dinner for connoisseurs through an exclusive agreement with Symington Family Estates. Viking Torgil, Viking Hemming and Viking Osfrid operate this itinerary from Lisbon to Porto, Portugal.

BELGIUM’S LIQUID GOLD: A five-day CroisiEurope cruise on Victor Hugo departing Brussels on August 28 will introduce travelers to Belgium’s world renowned beer. In addition to savoring the line’s onboard French cuisine, guests will head out to Liege, Hasselt, Antwerp and Brussels for excursions that include beer tastings, product presentations and visits to Belgium’s most famous breweries and landmarks, including the La Maison des Brasseurs Museum.
